Hi reader,
Thanks again for indulging me. I know that in previous weeks I’ve been publishing reviews of films I’ve seen at festivals I’ve been invited to as press. I have a couple more I hope to share with you soon: one of The Taste of Mango, an imagistic, beautifully made film that addresses difficult subjects—redress, cycles, life itself; and another on Starring Jerry As Himself, a quasi-documentary and action film that uses humour and mis-en-scène to not only develop affable characters but to provide a redemptive look at a life in hopes it will make a difference in the lives of others, the viewers.
I’ve been reflecting on the starts of Faithful Correspondence, which is also to reflect on my travels. Every so often a specific image or a memory comes back to me almost as a haunting, except it’s jubilant. I remember a crisp blue sky, the idea of a monument. I remember what it means to try: an essai.
I’ve also been thinking about where I’m going next. In the coming days and weeks I’ll be archiving my Substack posts on a WordPress site, faithfulcorrespondence.com. I’m doing this primarily to index these posts on the web a bit better than it has been done via Substack. I appreciate the interface and the community Substack aims to provide. I will still be posting on here, so if you’re subscribed, I hope you’ll stick around.
Nothing good in life comes easy, we know this for a fact in so many ways. Yet I hope for ease, I hope for understanding. I hope for an end to what seems inevitable but isn’t: violence. It’s an act of faith and courage, but I do it anyway. And I wish each of you the best. If there are any works of art, film or literature you’d like me to consider, please reply to this post or send me an email. x
